TRANSNET Port Terminals (TPT) recently welcomed one of the largest container vessels into the Ngqura Container Facility.
The MSC Savannah is a container ship built in 2011 with a gross tonnage of 91 621 tons and length of 335m. It was on its way to the Far East, having started its transhipment route in West Africa.
Velile Dube, TPT’s GM: Cape Channel, said the terminal serviced the giant vessel through the offloading of 550 containers and loading of a further 2 922 containers.
“We allocated maximum resources to ensure the quick turnaround of the MSC Savannah vessel. We were more than ready to effectively and efficiently handle the MSC Savannah vessel using our state-of-the-art equipment handled by our skilled workforce on hand,” Dube said.
The Ngqura Container Terminal (NCT) was designed to be a transhipment hub, servicing traffic from the East, South America, and West African markets. The deepest container terminal in Southern Africa, boasting a 16-metre draft, NCT has seen a steady improvement in volume growth and operational performance.
Since starting operations in 2009, the terminal has complemented the South African port system as a transhipment hub.
