KZN-based Tundra Solar Energy have made significant inroads in providing scalable solar power solutions geared at rural communities who have no access to electricity.

At the start of 2018, the company kicked off a project set to enhance their current product, the Commanda, that will see the product scale from home-based nano grids to community centric mini grid capability.

Tundra Solar Energy has also been working with a number of well-known local organisations and hardware retail chains and has entered into partnership agreements in neighbouring African countries. It was established in 2015 with two locations for product development that includes a primary factory in Imbonini Industrial Park, Shakas Rock.

“Our systems draw on an intimate knowledge of the African environments in which they are to be deployed. Designed and manufactured in South Africa – our units are ruggedised and tamper-proof,” said recently appointed CEO, Justin Scott.

“The rapidly deployable unit powers four 3W LED lights and can scale up to nine or 10, all from the same control unit. It also includes the ability to charge cell phones or tablets or other hand-held devices and can even power a 12V TV with a StarSat decoder.”

According to Scott, other technology efficiencies provide for optimum solar panel output and the unit is made using materials that ensure it lasts for many years. Modular and compact in design, the product can be wall hung or floor standing and with its plug and play attributes it’s simple to install.

Positioned positively for the next 24 months with key restructuring done by Scott at the helm, there has also been a big focus on securing new resellers in the southern Africa region.

“Our primary objective is to take power to areas and communities that have never had access to basic energy before, and to enable individuals and organizations to be part of creating a sustainable future.

“Our products and services help to conserve energy, to use energy efficiently, and generate clean renewable energy. We want to inspire, educate, and assist our clients in achieving their goals of cost stability and energy independence,” Scott said.
